Decorative paint: more than a colour.

Colour is often the first decorative paint decision, but it is not the only one. A wall, ceiling, façade, trim, or feature surface can have different substrates, previous coatings, lighting, exposure, and cleaning demands. A useful specification turns those realities into a considered sequence of preparation, primer or sealer where required, and a suitable finish.

Interior and exterior work should be discussed separately even when a colour family is shared. Conditions at the surface, weather exposure, moisture sources, and application windows can be very different. The relevant technical data sheet (TDS) is the source for a product’s intended use, preparation, mixing where applicable, application method, coverage guidance, drying, recoating, and limits.

Survey the surface, not only the room

Identify the substrate before choosing a coating route. New plaster, gypsum board, concrete, masonry, timber, metal, and a previously painted surface each need different questions. Look for chalking, flaking, cracks, stains, dampness, efflorescence, mould, glossy areas, patch repairs, or powdery material. Paint should not be expected to solve a building defect or active moisture source.

Determine whether existing coatings are sound and compatible. Areas that are peeling, weak, contaminated, or poorly adhered require attention before they receive another layer. A small test area can help inform a proposed route, but it does not override the TDS or a qualified assessment when the substrate condition is uncertain.

On exterior work, include orientation, shading, rain exposure, and the condition of joints and adjacent construction in the survey. On interior work, note kitchens, bathrooms, high-touch corridors, and spaces with limited ventilation. These observations help frame the product conversation without making unsupported claims about a coating’s performance.

  • Record the substrate, existing coating condition, and visible defects.
  • Investigate active dampness or building faults before coating.
  • Separate exterior exposure questions from interior cleaning needs.
  • Agree on the areas included in repair and preparation.

Match the finish to the intended visual result

Sheen affects more than style. Lower-sheen and higher-sheen finishes can reveal surface texture differently, while lighting can make a colour appear warmer, cooler, lighter, or darker. Review samples in the actual space and at the times of day that matter. Large areas and connected rooms should be considered together rather than approving a small swatch in isolation.

Decide what level of surface refinement is needed before application begins. Paint can unify colour, but it will not make major undulations, cracks, or rough repairs disappear. Fillers, putty, sanding, primers, sealers, or texture products should each be selected and used according to their own documentation and the actual substrate condition.

A colour reference supports communication, but the final appearance also depends on substrate colour, number of coats, application method, film build, and lighting. Keep a labelled approval sample and document any agreed finish level. This gives the contractor, owner, and supplier a practical point of reference if questions arise later.

Build a disciplined application sequence

Preparation usually includes cleaning, removing loose material, repairing suitable defects, sanding as required, and removing dust. The chosen product system determines whether a primer or sealer is needed and how it should be applied. Do not skip a documented preparation stage in an effort to gain speed; it can create a visible issue or adhesion concern that costs more time to correct.

Confirm the TDS for the exact products before starting. Follow its instructions for dilution, tools, number of coats, spread rate or coverage guidance, drying, recoating, and environmental conditions. Extra water, unapproved thinner, or a changed application method can alter the material. Product names alone are not instructions and should not be used to infer a mixing method.

Sequence the work to protect completed surfaces. Maintain clean tools, avoid transferring dust between sanding and painting areas, and allow stated drying or curing time before masking, handling, or returning a space to use. Keep sufficient material from the same order available for a continuous area where visual consistency is important.

  • Approve colour and sheen on a representative sample area.
  • Follow the TDS for preparation, dilution, coats, and recoat time.
  • Keep repaired and painted areas free from dust and contamination.
  • Plan masking, drying, and access around the documented cure stages.

Close out with realistic care and safe practice

Inspect the completed work under representative lighting and from normal viewing distances as well as close up. Note missed areas, inconsistent texture, repair visibility, or damage while correction is feasible. Assessment criteria should reflect the agreed scope and surface condition rather than an expectation that paint alone can change the underlying construction.

Give the occupier or maintenance team clear, product-appropriate information about when the surface can be touched, cleaned, or put back into routine use. Avoid aggressive cleaning or early contact until the documented cure stage is reached. When a surface is damaged later, identify the cause and the existing system before carrying out a touch-up.

Read the safety data sheet (SDS) for paints, primers, fillers, cleaners, and any additives. It contains the product-specific direction for hazards, ventilation, personal protective equipment, storage, spill response, and disposal. Follow local requirements and protect occupants, contractors, and adjoining areas during preparation and application.
