Read the timber before selecting a look
Timber species, cut, colour variation, grain direction, knots, and porosity all affect a finish. Open grain may need a different approach from close-grained timber, while resinous areas, previous coatings, fillers, adhesives, or contaminants can create uneven absorption or appearance. Prepare and inspect actual samples rather than assuming that a finish seen on another species will reproduce the same result.
Decide early whether the design calls for visible grain or an opaque surface. A clear system still changes colour and sheen; a stain can increase variation as well as create tone; a pigmented system may need a more uniform base. Describe the desired appearance in plain terms: natural or enriched colour, open or filled grain, low or higher sheen, and acceptable variation.
Moisture and storage conditions deserve attention before coating. Wood moves with changes in moisture, and coating a piece that has not acclimatised to its intended environment can complicate later performance. Product guidance and the project requirements should determine whether the material condition is suitable for finishing.
- Use offcuts or sample panels from the same timber where possible.
- Agree whether grain should remain visible or be concealed.
- Inspect for resin, glue squeeze-out, knots, old finish, and fillers.
- Confirm the wood condition and workspace conditions before application.
Treat preparation as part of the finish
Sanding shapes the final appearance. An uneven sequence can leave visible scratches, rounded details, or patches that accept stain differently. Work methodically with the abrasive grades and direction appropriate to the substrate and proposed system. Remove dust thoroughly between stages using the documented method; dust left in pores or on edges can undermine an otherwise careful application.
Edges, end grain, routed details, and joints often behave differently from flat faces. They may absorb more material or receive less consistent film build. Address these areas in the sample process, not only when the final pieces are in the spray area. A finish schedule that is workable on a flat test board may need adjustment for the actual construction.
If a previously finished item is being refinished, identify the existing coating where possible and check adhesion on an inconspicuous test area. A new coat can react with an unknown finish or fail to bond to a polished surface. Do not rely on a visual judgement of compatibility; follow the TDS and seek technical guidance where the existing substrate is uncertain.
Give every layer a defined purpose
A sealer can help prepare timber and manage absorption; a primer can create a foundation for an opaque finish; stains establish colour; topcoats or varnishes establish the final visual and protective layer. Their order, number of coats, and sanding stages must be selected as a system. A product may have a familiar category name while still having particular limitations in its TDS.
Mixing and thinning are not opportunities to tune a product by instinct. Use only the components, ratios, pot-life limits, and application conditions stated for that product. Using an unapproved thinner or combining materials from unrelated systems can affect drying, appearance, and adhesion. Keep containers labelled and record the materials used on samples and production pieces.
Respect flash-off, drying, and recoating conditions. A surface may feel dry while not being ready for sanding, assembly, packing, or another coat. Rushing these stages can trap solvents, mark a surface, or reduce the consistency of the finish. Plan production around documented cure requirements rather than forcing the system to meet an unrealistic schedule.

- Create and retain a labelled finish sample for approval.
- Allow documented drying and cure time before handling or packing.
Evaluate the finish in use, not only at the bench
Review samples in lighting similar to the installation environment. Daylight, warm artificial light, shadows, and the viewing angle can make colour and sheen appear different. Check panels side by side and agree on an acceptable range of natural variation before completing a batch. This is especially important where separate components will meet in a visible installation.
Consider what the completed surface will experience: handling, cleaning, contact with objects, humidity changes, and normal wear. Those demands should inform the system discussion, but they are not a reason to promise performance beyond the product documentation. Ask for guidance when the use is demanding or unusual, and document any agreed maintenance approach.
Review the safety data sheet (SDS) before using coatings, thinners, cleaners, or hardeners. It provides the product-specific information for hazards, ventilation, protective equipment, storage, fire precautions, spill response, and disposal. Keep ignition control, extraction, and local legal requirements central to the workshop plan.
